Bibliography Fiction Cont.

  • Mathilda (1959)
    1. The novel deals with a father's passionate (incestuous) love for his daughter. This novel represents Mary's emotional state at the time: she had lost three children and the relationship with her father and her husband were strained. The novel is a melodramatic representation of this period of her life. Although this short novel was written in the summer of 1819, it was not published until 1959, over a hundred years after Mary's death. It was Mary's wish not to publish the novel, as she probably realised that it was too personal to be published.
  • Collected Tales and Stories (1976)
    1. Mary wrote short stories throughout her life but they were only collected and published in 1976.
